Sooners lose 21-20 to 'Canes
by   |  October 3, 2009  |

The No. 17 Miami Hurricanes acted out a similar script written by Brigham Young in week one by taking advantage of an early injury and blown coverages in their 21-20 victory Saturday over the No. 8 Sooners.

The loss drops OU to 2-2 on the season, and it was the team’s second one-point loss.

The game was determined on a failed third-and-six stop with 2:35 left when sophomore quarterback Jacory Harris fo und an open receiver to drive the final nail in the Sooners’ coffin. Miami ran out the clock to end the Sooners’ Bowl Championship Series dream and continued its own.

Sophomore wide receiver Ryan Broyles left the game after the first drive, which left freshman quarterback Landry Jones without his favorite option to throw to. So, offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson went with a conservative play call, which resulted in an offense that had trouble putting two successful drives together for the rest of the night.

Before Broyles went out, freshman quarterback Landry Jones and junior wide receiver Cameron Kenney connected on a 16-yard touchdown to give the Sooners their only lead of the game. Sophomore kicker Jimmy Stevens added a field goal early in the second quarter before the Hurricanes took control of the game.

Jones finished the game completing 18 of 30 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown. Kenney led all OU receivers with six catches for 72 yards and a touchdown.

While Miami’s defense was having success against the run, Harris overcame two early interceptions and found open spaces in OU’s secondary to in the second and third quarters. He picked apart the Sooners for two touchdown passes, one in the second quarter and one in the third quarter, over the middle of the field

Wilson and the Sooners’ offense continued to try t o establish a late-running game, but holding penalties and Miami’s powerful defensive line killed OU’s opportunities to put points on the board.

The one bright spot on the Sooners’ defense was junior defensive end Jeremy Beal. He recorded his second-straight three-sack day, which raises his season total to six sacks.

OU will return to play at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 10 in Norman against the Baylor Bears. The game is the Sooners’ conference opener.
