Q& A with Pretty and Nice
by   |  October 1, 2009  |

Pretty and Nice, an energetic electro-punk outfit out of Boston, will be stopping by Oklahoma City tonight in support of The Get Up Kids and Youth Group at the Diamond Ballroom. Their lively, lighthearted edgy take on disco could easily draw comparisons to Of Montreal. Lead singer and guitarist Jeremy Mendicino took the time to answer a few questions about influences, life on the road and the values of stretching.

What do you guys set out to do when writing your music?

Mash. Basically, we don't try very intentionally to do much but write songs that are fun and energetic and nifty and all that.

How would you describe your sound?

Loud? Meanly smilingly nice? Nicely smilingly mean? Probably just 'fun and spazzy.' That seems to do it.

What do you think about The Get Up Kids/Youth Group?

GUK equals an awesome and important band (and don't you young'ns forget it!)

Youth Group equals really cool dreamy rock from Aussieland. Check it out America!

What is the craziest thing that's happened to you on the road?

Once we passed a flaming stack of hay bails on the side of the interstate at like 3 in the morning in Utah (I think). The weird part was that they were surrounded by traffic cones, and there was nothing else around for like a million miles. David Lynch was nearby I think.

Who are some contemporary and older bands that you look up to?

Jeepers! So many. Well, in no particular order, here are some: Deerhoof, Failure, Man or Astroman, XTC, Aphex Twin, Scott Walker, Toads & Mice, Despaley, Brainiac, Hum, Elvis Costello.

What has been the highlight of your career so far? Hmmm, In and Out Burger?

Yeah. Oh, and releasing records that people put on their record shelves next to Prince (alphabetizing is next to godliness, children), that as well.

What do you hope to do in the future?

Make more records and not have to worry about making rent when we're on tour, and record a record for the Big Big Bucks!

Do you guys have any rituals you do before shows or on tour?

Stretching. Stretchiness is also next to godliness.
