Sooners downed by VCU
by   |  November 23, 2009  |

The 17th ranked OU men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season by a score of 82-69 Saturday against head coach Jeff Capel’s former team, Virginia Commonwealth.

VCU broke the game open with a 20-8 run in the first half, during which they hit six straight three-pointers

The Sooners struggled in their first road game of the season, facing a competitive VCU squad and an enthusiastic road crowd, which Capel warned could be a factor after the team’s home win against Louisiana-Monroe.

OU was the first ranked team to play at VCU since No. 11 Louisville visited in 1994. It was coach Capel’s first game at VCU since he left the team to coach the Sooners in 2006.

Sophomore guard and preseason All-American Willie Warren struggled in the game, scoring only eight points on 3-for-14 shooting.

The Sooners shot poorly from three-point range, an area that had been a strong point for the team up until Saturday. OU shot 19.2% from behind the arc.

Senior guard Tony Crocker had his best game of the season in a losing effort. Crocker scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds.

The Sooners’ next game will be in Anchorage, Alaska for the Great Alaska Shootout. The tournament begins Wednesday when OU faces San Diego.
