Other big name acts may have rolled through the Oklahoma City metro area in recent years, but none smashed through the Ford Center and tore the house down the way AC/DC did Wednesday night.
From the moment the opening video animation rolled until the last artillery gun fired two hours later, AC/DC let it be known to the near capacity crowd that they are still one of the greatest rock bands of all time. They kicked off the show with the first single from their 2008 album Black Ice, “Rock n Roll Train”, and after another solid track from the album the band launched into its plethora of arena anthems like “Black in Black”, “TNT” and “Hells Bells.”
Lead singer Brian Johnson and lead guitarist Angus Young kept the thousands of blinking red devil horn wearing audience members on their feet with memorable antics such as Young’s strip tease during “The Jack,” and Johnson running up to swing the bell before the start of “Hells Bells.”
Johnson, 53 sounds remarkably good considering the band has nearly been on the road for nearly two years in promotion of the new album. His voice did start to wear down towards the end of the night as he grew frustrated with his ear piece, eventually tossing it to the ground and nodding to Young and audibly noting his voice was through. The electric crowd made up for any shortcomings Johnson was having, and in parts drowning out Johnson while belting along with the group.
Even with Johnson working the crowd into a non-stop hyped frenzy, the heart and soul of AC/DC is still Young. He had already lit up the stage with his many blaring solos, but it was that one in particular that had concert goers buzzing after the show, an incredible 12 minute solo to end “Let there Be Rock.” Almost with every single solo of Young’s, he pointed and cupped his ears eliciting the crowd along while he took center stage.
AC/DC took full advantage of the remodeling the Ford Center has underwent and it played a vital part in the evening performance as the sound reverberates through the arena better than it ever has before.
After nearly 36 years of being together in one form or another, AC/DC sounds as good as ever. The energy and passion they played with at the Ford Center was tremendous given how long the current tour has been and the age of the performers. With acts like U2, Springsteen and Bon Jovi having been in Oklahoma in recent months and years, AC/DC proved that unlike other bands they have stayed true to their roots and are still the hardest rocking band around. There is no doubt for those in attendance that this concert won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
