Rowing Competes at Big 12 championships

The OU women’s rowing teams had a strong showing at the inaugural Big 12 championships this weekend in Wyandotte, Kansas.

The OU varsity four and first novice eight won their races, while the second novice eight took second in the field of four teams.

However, OU, competing in its first season as a team, does not have enough athletes to fill a first or second varsity eight, and was unable to accumulate enough points to place in the overall championships.

"It was a great day of racing," head coach Leeanne Crain said. "All of our boats performed really well and I think we've got a tremendous future ahead of us, based on how well we competed in the Big 12 today.”

Texas took first place in the event, with Kansas State taking second and Kansas finishing in third.

Track and field competes over weekend

Sophomore D’Andre Fisher picked up the win in the 110-meter hurdles, and freshman Mookie Salaam snagged victories in both the 100 and 200-meter dash.

Both achieved qualifying marks for the NCAA Regional.

In Irvine, Calif., freshman Will Claye recorded a regional qualifying distance in the long jump after finishing second. Fellow freshman Alex Madkins also scored a qualifying marks, finishing fourth.

In Palo Alto, Calif., sophomore Scott Cooper set another regional qualifying mark for the 800-meter run, with a time that earned him seventh place.
