The Octopus Project is making a quick, weeklong jaunt across the South in support of its upcoming EP, “Golden Beds.” Luckily for Norman, they decided to finish the excursion with a quick stop at the Opolis Monday night.
If the name sounds familiar, it may be because The Octopus Project was one of the headlining acts of the inaugural Norman Music Festival a little over a year ago.
It was the band that really got the party started. Before the set began, the band passed out long, slender balloons attached to straws. At first, the crowd wasn’t really sure what was going on at first but quickly caught up.
As Octopus Project whirled into the beginning of its indie-tronica journey, the band members instructed the crowd to blow up the balloons without tying the end. The music began to spin and swirl and after a brief buildup, OP signaled to let the balloons go.
The movement of the balloons meshed perfectly with the weave of the music. It was one of the most iconic moments of NMF history.
Even when the Austin-based Octopus Project isn’t in a festival setting, it still provides a daringly fun show.
The members of the band are in a constant flurry of switching up instruments and dashing between slow, swaying chords and explosive, fiery guitar riffs.
The Octopus Project is a largely instrumental band, and its arsenal is seemingly endless. There is the typical setup of guitar, bass and drums, but quirky instruments like samplers and the glockenspiel make their music special.
The most attention-grabbing tool is the theremin, which looks like a sort of melodic magic wand and is played with inflections of the hand. The band is visually fetching as well, and its amp covers (consisting of pastel monster-like creations) are too adorable to resist.
But the band isn’t just gimmicks and glitter. It has some serious musical chops and each member plays with sweat and passion. Octopus Project has a great ear for catchy melodies, and if you want to get a listen for yourself check out “Truck” and “I Saw The Bright Shinies.”
The Octopus Project show Monday night might just be the perfect cool-down for this sweltering summer. Its chilly beats will have you moving in no time, and who knows what surprises it might have in store this time?
