COLUMN: Joshua Boydston's Dfest Schedule
by   |  July 23, 2009  |

For those who want to hear about some of the bands I’ll be seeing, compulsively stalk me or are just too lazy to come up with a schedule for themselves, I've decided to write up my own personal schedule for your enjoyment.

It’s a good peek at many of the good local bands, as well as some great national ones as well.

Friday

6:10 p.m.

Hush Hush, Commotion

Electric Circus

I can hardly think of a better way to kick off the festival. HH,C is just a bunch of hardworking, nice guys with impeccably catchy indie-pop tunes. All of their sets are tight, agreeable and downright fun.

7:10 p.m.

The Boom Bang

Electric Circus

I’ve been dying to see these guys for a few months now, and I’m ecstatic that I will finally get to. Its music sounds downright nasty on MySpace, and I’ve heard great things about it live.

8 p.m.

Delta Spirit

Poseidon Stage

I promise this will be some of the best outright musicianship you hear all weekend. Upbeat blues/soul rock, and singer Matt Vasquez has an EPIC voice.

9 p.m.

Citizen Cope

Poseidon Stage

Some of his stuff is pretty catchy. Citizen Cope isn’t exactly my favorite musician, but I wouldn’t mind catching a bit of his set, which is supposedly pretty enjoyable.

9:30 p.m.

Crocodile

IDL Ballroom

I hope I get around to catching some of its set. Crocodile is another band I’ve been dying to see, but just never gotten around to it. Its music just puts a smile on my face.

10:10 p.m.

The Burning Hotels

Electric Circus

I’ve been hearing about this DFW group for a few months now. Its music is very clean and clever. Think the Strokes, but a little less vintage.

10:30 p.m.

Gogol Bordello

Triton Stage

I missed it at Lollapalooza last year, and I’m so glad I’ll get another chance.

There is no other description for it other than gypsy punk (it will make sense when you take a listen). It's a large band that goes BANANAZ on stage.

11:10 p.m.

Callupsie

Electric Circus

I’m afraid that I’ll miss Callupsie, depending on how awesome Gogol Bordello is. But if gypsy punk isn’t for you, this is definitely your best bet. One of the most polished bands in Oklahoma, its self- titled full-length release is probably the best local release I’ve heard in the past few years.

12:10 a.m.

The Pretty Black Chains

Electric Circus

This band is quickly becoming my favorite local act in Oklahoma. Yet again, I haven’t managed to see it live (the band has been together for just a few months now), but it's quickly gaining a notorious representation on the stage. its singles are just as great.

1:10 a.m.

Junebug Spade

Electric Circus

I’m not sure if I’ll be able to make it this late, but if I do, this is what I’ll be listening to. It sounds like a dead-on reincarnation of the Rolling Stones (how are they not dead yet?!) and would cap off what looks to be a pretty good evening.

Saturday

6 p.m.

The Knux

Triton Stage

I discovered these guys not too long ago — a wonderful blend of rock riffs into old-school hip-hop. Refreshingly original, and live hip-hop is always a great time. Check out “Bang! Bang!” and “Cappuccino” for a taste.

6:10 p.m.

Here Is There

Electric Circus

Here Is There is, hands down, my favorite Tulsa band. Every show I’ve seen it play leaves me in awe. Its set is so energetic, and its brand of experimental rock, with gorgeous, accessible melodies, keeps things nice and interesting

7 p.m.

Ra Ra Riot

Triton Stage

By far my favorite national headliner at Dfest this year, Ra Ra Riot has exploded over the past year, and for good reason.

Think a bit more melancholic Vampire Weekend, but much more gorgeous and lovely. I saw it at SXSW, and it did not disappoint.

Just watching the violinist and cellist work it made me break out into a sweat. Wes Miles is a charming singer and the beauty of the records translate well live.

I’m frankly puzzled and frustrated that Ra Ra Riot and Mates of State are scheduled for the exact same time. I think Dfest organizers really dropped the ball with that mishap.

Why not switch one of them with either Blue October/Metro Station later that night? Very disappointing.

8:15 p.m.

Rooney

Poseidon Stage

Just a brief stop at this set to catch some California pop before ...

The Cool Kids. Photo provided.

8:30 p.m.

The Cool Kids

Triton Stage

Win. The Cool Kids are just awesome.

I love hip-hop that I, a rural white kid, can thoroughly enjoy.

Hell, half their songs are about cereal and sneakers. I saw these guys at Lolla a year ago, and to put it this way, they only fell short of Radiohead that night on my list of favorites.

Do yourself a favor and check these guys out.

9:10 p.m.

Native Lights

Dilly Deli

A sort of, let’s say, supergroup out of Tulsa consisting of members of Callupsie, Unwed Sailor and Ester Dang. I’m not very familiar with its music, but I can’t help but think it will be awesome with the bands involved.

10:10 p.m.

Love In October

Electric Circus

I had never heard of it before viewing the lineup, but upon listening to a bit of its stuff, I am convinced that it would be a show I would regret missing in a few years. It’s impossibly catchy electro-indie band formed by native Swedish brothers.

If there is one thing I’ve learned in music, it is to always trust the music of Swedes. Always.

10:30 p.m.

Gringo Star

IDL Ballroom

The name alone almost warrants liking it.

Luckily for us, the music is great as well. It's one of those bands that could really blow up, so catch it now and say you saw it when.

11:10 p.m.

Mayola

Electric Circus

I don’t think anyone could not have fun at a Mayola show — so energetic and animated. Plus, the music is a blast as well. Just watching bassist Antonio Lancaster is a show in itself.

11:30 p.m.

Cake

Poseidon Stage

I guess you could look at it as a guilty pleasure, but I just really want to sing “she’s going the distance” at the top of my lungs for a bit.

12:10a.m.

Jabee

Joe Momma's Pizza

Although I will most likely just stick over at Cake the whole time, if I get a little anxious, I’m headed over to Jabee, the best local rapper around.

Other great acts that I unfortunately won’t get to see:

Friday

Carney

7 p.m.

Poseidon Stage

Unwed Sailor

9:10 p.m.

Electric Circus

The City Lives

10:10 p.m.

Dilly Deli

Saturday

The Uglysuit

6 p.m.

Poseidon Stage

Jacob Abello

6:20 p.m.

PAC — Doenges Theatre

Mates of State

7 p.m.

Poseidon Stage

Sheree Chamberlain

11:30 p.m.

McNellie’s

Radiohead 2 years, 10 months ago

Radiohead at Lolla 08 were amazing. I agree.

Cake was actually really good, too. my vote for best Dfest performance was Citizen Cope, really good show.
