In FY 2008, the US spent about $2.98 trillion, and $17.3 billion of it was on NASA. That's only 0.6% of the federal budget. The following departments spend more money than NASA: Social Security, Medicare, Medicade, Unemployment, Interest on Nat'l Debt, Defense, Global War on Terror, Health, Education, Housing, State, Homeland Security, Energy, Justice and Agriculture. NASA gets chump change compared to those.

The government should be spending money on scientific research and pay no bother to a free market economy. I'd rather give $700 billion to NASA than delaying and perpetuating that economic problem at hand.

What you say is true. The immediate point is that NASA gets a very large percentage of the money allocated for scientific research, forcing a large amount of significant progress in other areas to be put on hold. That being said, the government should support science and engineering research efforts more than they currently do imho.
