Finally, the heat subsided at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club Thursday as OU assistant coach Phillip Bryan and junior-to-be Liam Logan competed in the round of 32.
Bryan began Thursday morning against Gene Webster Jr., of San Bernardino, Calif., who came in as one of the hotter players in the tournament as the No. 5 seed coming out of stroke play.
Although an underdog Bryan, a Mustang, Okla. native, continued his streak through his home course defeating Webster 3 and 2.
After his morning match Bryan moved into afternoon play in which he was matched with Cameron Peck, of Olympia, Wash..
Peck, the 2008 U.S. Junior Amateur Champion and Texas A&M signee carded six straight birdies at No.6, No.7, and No. 8 to take a one up lead to the back nine.
Bryan answered as he has all tournament making birdie at the par 4, 10th and sealed his way to a quarterfinal match-up with a par on the 17th hole.
On the other side of the bracket sat one of Bryan’s players.
Liam Logan a junior-to-be on the Oklahoma golf team played his morning round of 32 match against Jace Long, of Dixon, Mo.
Falling behind three down after five holes Logan continued grinding like he has done the past two days.
After hitting his tee shot short left, Logan capitalized on a Long failed attempt out of the greenside bunker of the par-3 12th hole.
The Fort Worth, Tex., native sank a 12- footer for par cutting the deficit to 1-down.
The match would stay there until Logan evened the match all-square with a par on the par-4, 480 yard 14th.
With both players then recording pars on the par 5, 584 yard 18th Logan would enter extra holes for the second consecutive day.
Spraying his tee shot off the first extra hole (No.1) Logan would not be able to salvage par as did Long, and his run would come to an end.
Although his tournament run was over Logan enjoyed playing in a U.S.G.A event at his home course.
“ (I) wish I would have made it further but it’s awesome having it here. Staying at my house is so much better than living in a hotel,” said Logan after falling to Long 1 up (19 holes).
Bryan now faces Sam Lyons, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Friday morning at 7:15 a.m. in a quarterfinal match-up. Lyons moves to the quarters after defeating Oklahoma State prodigy Rickie Fowler 1 up, stealing a victory with a 20-foot birdie on the par 5, 18th.
With a victory, Bryan would enter the semi-finals and a possible match-up with No.1 overall seed Nick Taylor, of Canada.
The semi-final matches begin at 12:30 p.m.
