Early Beat with Followed By Static & PVC Street Gang
10 p.m. Friday
Opolis
113 N. Crawford, Norman
$5 over 21/$7 under
For a little local flavor this weekend, you can stop by the Opolis on Friday night to hear the dripping ’70s guitar pop of Norman’s own Early Beat.
Austin-based Followed By Static and Denton’s PVC Street Gang open up the night. Followed By Static’s unique sound blends beautiful acoustic rhythm with fuzzy guitar noise that comes across like Sonic Youth slapped upon an Elliot Smith track.
PVC Street Gang’s music is full of big and nasty guitar riffs and a head pounding bass drum.
Should be a nice, eclectic evening of music.
Scott H. Biram with El Paso Hot Button
10 p.m. Saturday
Opolis
113 N. Crawford
$10 adv/$12 over 21/$14 under 21
One night. Two bands. Two people.
It’s not too often you can catch a one-man band nowadays, but you can see two different species of this endangered creature Saturday night at the Opolis.
Hometown hero El Paso Hot Button will open up the night with his nasty, boisterous punk grunge noise. You will most likely be able to catch some new tracks off of EHPB’s upcoming August release, and if that wasn’t reason enough to come, Scott H. Biram is no slouch either.
Nationally renowned for his blistering blues-rock, Biram’s latest release, “Something’s Wrong/Lost Forever,” has received positive reviews.
That album was decidedly less manic than it’s predecessors, but you can be assured Biram’s performance on Saturday night will be gritty, raw and hectic to say the least.
Gomez with The Republic Tigers
7 p.m. Sunday
Diamond Ballroom
8001 S. Eastern Ave, Oklahoma City
$17 adv/$20 door
Indie-rock vets, Gomez, will be crossing the Atlantic and playing in support of its newest release “A New Tide.”
Gomez’s Mercury Prize-winning brand of pop-rock has been around for over a decade now, and it looks as though the band won’t be going away anytime soon. Its insanely catchy music will please nearly any music lover’s ears.
Up-and-comers The Republic Tigers will be opening the show with its gorgeous, boundless tunes and is worth the price of admission alone.
The Diamond Ballroom will be a great place to catch some captivating, picturesque indie tunes on Sunday night.
The Veils with Foreign Born and Other Girls
10 p.m. Monday
Opolis
113 N. Crawford, Norman
$10 adv/$12 over 21/$14 under
You can catch three great buzz bands in town this Monday night. All three of them are highly underrated bands, and you can expect that any one, if not all of them, will be blowing up in the coming year.
The Veils’ “Sun Gangs” has been one of the best of albums of 2009, though criminally ignored. The band comes across as a combination of Arcade Fire and Interpol, which sounds like it might be odd, but will make perfect sense upon hearing it.
Foreign Born has shown great promise with its latest release, “Person To Person,” which was a lovely vintage, summery journey.
Other Girls are yet another band that displayed strong potential with their record, “Perfect Cities.” Think Band of Horses, but Midwest instead of Northwest.
This evening is your best chance for an “I Saw Them Back When” moment this summer.
