As swirling winds added to unbearable heat Tuesday, one word could describe Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club and the 2009 U.S. Public Links Championship.
Difficult.
Nick Taylor continued steady play on the tough USGA set-up with a 1-under-par 70. Taylor, who will be a senior at the University of Washington next year, was the only player to score two rounds under par (66-70) while on his way to becoming the medalist of the 2009 U.S. Amateur Publinx.
With day two of competition coming to a close Tuesday evening, the dream of becoming Publinx champion came to an end for 101 players.
Both OU representatives were not part of that group.
Their dream lives on.
Oklahoma assistant coach Phillip Bryan weathered the gusty, swirling winds to finish in a share of 23rd place at +4 after a 4-over-par 75 Tuesday.
Finding himself 5-over-par through eight holes, the Mustang, Okla., native answered back making birdies on three of five holes highlighted by kick-in birdies on the third and fourth holes.
OU's other hopeful is Fort Worth, Texas, native Liam Logan.
Following a 2-over-par 73, the junior-to-be finished in a tie for 32nd after a 3-over-par 74 Tuesday, and will take on Woodstock, Ga., Anders Albertson at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday to begin his match play portion of the '09 U.S. Publinx.
Following the round, Logan admitted he doesn't have very much match play experience.
"I've only played match play twice and the second time to play (match play format) was last week," Logan said. "I'll still be nervous but I feel pretty confident going into tomorrow and I know this course pretty well having played it a lot."
Oklahoma State University's Rickie Fowler recorded a 1-over-par 72 while locking up the 4th seed as he heads into match play.
