Men's Tennis: Sooners improve to 2-0 with win over ORU
by   |  February 2, 2009  |

While most of the world was watching Super Bowl XLIII, the OU men’s tennis team was working hard to improve to 2-0 on the year.

The Sooners were able to win their second match in a row Sunday after beating Oral Roberts University 7-0.

“Every match we have to take seriously, ” said Blake Boswell, junior tennis player, “I was able to get the point for my team, and now I cheer my teammates on to do the same.”

The Sooners were able to dominate the match just as they did before against Texas Pan-American. The Sooners swept the doubles matches, 8-2, 8-3, and 8-4. The team was also able to win all six singles matches to win the match overall.

This was the second match in a row where the Sooners were the home team but played outside of Norman. The Sooners will soon be moving into the newly built Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion for the rest of the season.

“We are definitely excited about playing in our new stadium soon, it is going to be amazing,” said Andrew Oatman, freshman tennis player.

The Sooners look forward to a promising spring season led by senior Sergey Avdeyev and junior Andrei Daescu. Avdeyev was ranked 122 on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association pre-season top 125 players, while Daescu was ranked 22.

This season will not be easy for the Sooners, they will have to face seven teams ranked in the ITA top 25 including number two Texas and number 21 Oklahoma State.

The Sooners will be on the road for eight out of their next nine matches. They will face the University of Washington next in Seattle on Feb. 6. The team’s next home match will be on Feb. 12 when they face number 12 Tulsa here in Norman.
