OU President David Boren was sworn in by Vice President Joe Biden as co-chair of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board Monday afternoon at a ceremony in the White House.
University spokesman Jay Doyle said Boren arrived in Washington, D.C., late Sunday night and was sworn in around 4:30 p.m. Monday.
Doyle said Boren should be returning to Oklahoma later tonight or Wednesday.
President Barack Obama announced in October that Boren and former Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel would serve as co-chairs of the board.
The intelligence panel is meant to provide the president with an independent source of advice on the effectiveness of the U.S. intellegence community, according to the White House’s Web site.
Doyle said he was not entirely sure how many times Boren would be traveling to the Capitol for his duties on the intelligence board.
"This has been something that I believe they’ve said [they would meet] nine times a year, but I’m not positive if they’ve set anything in stone," Doyle said.
Boren served in the U.S. Senate from 1979-1994. While in the Senate, he was the longest-serving chair of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
