Are you an avid ping pong enthusiast? Or does bellydancing capture your attention? Perhaps you are interested in less obscure activities such as volunteer work, politics, religion or… Arashi Taiko? OU’s student organizations are many and varied, so no matter where your interests lie chances are that there will be a corresponding club. Check out studentlife.ou.edu for a complete list.
OU Cousins
Find a pseudo-family member and reach out to an international student by joining OU Cousins. First, members fill out a form that identifies their hobbies and interests, and then they are matched with a new international student and encouraged to befriend him or her. OU hosts several social events that members attend with their new cousins, such as a fall festival and a barbecue at the end of the year. Visit oucousins.ou.edu to learn more.
OU Improv!
This improv group, also known as Obviously Unrehearsed Improvisational Comedy, provides free performances on campus usually in Meacham Auditorium. Members of this comedy troupe can sometimes be seen passing out flyers in unusual ways (like pretending to be a robot). Some members are also part of the theatre department, but the group is also open to others.
Campus Activities Council (CAC)
This large group helps organize and host events such as Parent’s Weekends, Homecoming, concerts on campus, U-Sing and many more. As a member of CAC, you can apply for an executive position or be a member of a committee. This club is recommended for the responsible and organizationally inclined and those who want to help run or improve events at OU.
Animal Volunteers Alliance
If you agree that dog is man’s best friend, the Animal Volunteers Alliance might be the perfect club for you. This service alliance seeks to improve the lives of animals by providing volunteers to non-profit rescue organizations (there are several in Norman) and raising awareness of animal welfare issues.
Bellydance Club
The Bellydance Club actually does exist—we’re not pulling an elaborate prank on freshmen (as funny as that would be). Check out this club to learn more, promote and participate in this type of Middle Eastern cultural dance. And in addition, this organization would be a great way to gain some self-confidence on the dance floor.
University of Oklahoma Student
Association (UOSA)
UOSA is OU’s major student governing body. The undergraduate section of this association includes representatives from each specific college with elections being held each semester. Lately, the number of those running for office have lagged, so learn more about UOSA at congress.ou.edu and win back a positive activist reputation for OU.
Arashi Taiko
Traditional Japanese drummers, rejoice! To break up this group’s name, Arashi is a Japanese pop group that has achieved great success both in Japan and all across Asia. Taiko means “drum” in Japanese. This style of drumming as performance art is relatively new. This group strives to teach others about Japanese culture as well as perform at OU functions.
Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship
Chi Alpha (XA) is a Christian campus ministry at OU and contrary to what it sounds like, it is not part of the Greek system. The group is led by pastors Nick and Becky Calloway who offer LATENITE, a large worship meeting on Tuesday nights and Lifegroups, which are smaller Bible studies organized by students for students.
Sooner Ping Pong Club
For ping pong newbies and experts, this club is sure to improve players’ game through regular practice and small competitions. Another purpose of the club is to raise awareness of ping pong rules and regulations. Just don’t forget to channel “Balls of Fury” and bring your game face.
