Giving Back

From the Spoonholder to statue of President Bizzell various sculptures, art and symbols given to the university as gifts from graduating classes can be found around campus. Class gifts allow graduates to leave their mark on OU, providing an everlasting legacy that future Sooners can enjoy.

“I wouldn’t mind donating,” says Maria Castellanos-Aymat, health and exercise science senior. “I don’t think it’s a bad thing. Like anything else, it’s just giving back.”

This year’s gift commemorates the 2009 graduate class but also the Oklahoma Memorial Union’s 80th anniversary. A stained-glass window is to be placed above the doors between the Clarke-Anderson room and the Will Rogers room on the first floor. Class gifts are made possible by donations from graduating students, who have the chance to become members of OU’s Young Alumni Association by donating $25 or more.

Here’s a look at past gifts:

• 1906: This gift is located near the Old Science Hall. When the rock, which was originally found after it fell from a train between Norman and Oklahoma City, made its arrival on campus, “06” was chiseled into it.

• 1910: The original Spoonholder was made possible by the class of 1910 and lasted until the 1980s. The Class of 1999 and 1949 helped with the replacement of the Spoonholder on the North Oval.

• The classes of 1915, 1917, 1919, 1920, 1932 and 1933 are all responsible for six arches located at three entrances to the campus. Originally, these arches were called “gateways.”

• 1921: Though the class of 1921’s gift was lost with the expansion of the stadium in 1949. The gift was the stadium tower and original reflecting pool.

• 1935: Located near the Union and Monnet Hall, this class’ gift is a fountain and pool.

• 1943: A familiar statue on campus, the President Bizzell statue on the South Oval was created by art professor Joseph Taylor.

• 1990: In order to recognize OU’s centennial, the class of 1990 gave the south entrance of the South Oval two arches.

• 1998: Located on the Stuart Landing of the Union, the Union Seed Sower seal was created by Paul Moore, an OU sculpture professor.

• 2000: The class of 2000 brought the stadium reflecting pool back to campus.

• 2001: The new courtyard that was constructed as part of an addition to the student leadership wing holds the Union Courtyard Fountain given to OU by the class of 2001.

• 2002: “The Guardian” sculpture, designed by Native American artist Enoch Kelly Haney is a replica of the statue atop the State Capitol Dome. It was purchased and installed on campus in 2002.

• 2003: The class of 2003 marked the southwest entrance of a University park with a raised flower bed, garden benches and more than 40 trees. The OU Chant carved in limestone serves as the central feature.

• 2004: The class of 2004 chose to honor Sooners who had lost their lives in the service of our country by constructing the American Flag Plaza which is located near the stadium.

• 2005: An exterior clock engineered to keep perfect time is located in the Adams Walker Mall area, a gift given by the class of 2005.

• 2006: The 2006 class placed a replica of the 1906 rock near the new research campus off Jenkins Avenue.

• 2007: Located on the north end of the Michael F. Price Walk on the South Oval, a carnelian granite sculpture, known as “Disc Ruin,” was made by Jesus Moroles.

• 2008: The class of 2008 replaced the original campus sundial with a custom made one that provides a focal point for OU’s outdoor spaces.
