A Norman North High School senior is one of 10 in the running to win a car and $25,000 scholarship.
Incoming freshman Sogoal Davani is a finalist for the Honda 5 Free Ride Scholarship. The winner will receive a $25,000 scholarship to a four-year, post-secondary institution and a new 2009 Honda Civic LX.
The winner must be a resident of a central Oklahoma county, have had a 3.5 grade-point average and be in good standing in school. A selection committee chose the finalists, and will make its final selection today after considering public votes. The public is asked to vote for the student it thinks is most deserving.
Davani used her leadership role in Delta Epsilon Chi, a high school marketing, management, entrepreneurship and community service association, to help deserving cancer patients.
Through DECA, she hosted a fashion show and donated the proceeds to a research fund for Pseudomyxoma Peritonei, a rare type of cancer that has affected her life drastically.
She said when her brother was diagnosed with Pseudomyxoma Peritonei a little more than a year ago, it greatly changed her family members’ lives. She said the scholarship would help ease their minds.
“Since he has been diagnosed, it has put lots of stress on my family,” Davani said. “This scholarship would help my family tremendously. They could have one less stress on their shoulders.”
