The first weekend of Big 12 play for the OU Women’s soccer team (1-9, 0-2) did not go according to script as it dropped the first two conference games on the road against the Texas Tech Red Raiders (6-3-1, 1-2) and the No. 18 Colorado Buffaloes (8-1-2, 1-0-1).
Sunday afternoon’s game in Lubbock ended in a tough 2-1 double-overtime defeat despite having a lead going into halftime.
The Sooners’ sole goal came off the foot of forward Whitney Palmer when she put a pass from midfielder Kelsey Allison at the 32-minute mark. Palmer, who is OU’s leading scorer, scored her fifth goal of the season against the Red Raiders.
Shortly after the break TTU tied the game 1-1 during the 58th minute on a one-timer by forward Rezaie Zhaleh.
Neither team was able to break the tie during regulation or in the first ten minute overtime period, but Tech defender Brittney Harrison headed the ball into the OU net at the 101:06 mark during the second overtime for the game-winning goal.
“We let one slip away today (Sunday) after we did enough to come away with a win,” said OU Head Coach Nicole Nelson. “We had a couple of defensive mistakes that cost us the game but you have to give Texas Tech credit. They did a nice job of coming from behind on their home field, despite a solid effort by our attack in the final third.”
Friday evening’s conference opener against the Buffaloes was not as competitive of a match as the Sooners were blanked 5-0.
CU forward Gianna DeSaverio scored the only two goals of the first half as the final three goals came during the final 45 minutes from midfielder Kelly Butler and forward Mel Hicks, who put the final two goals on the board.
The Sooners are back in action in a non-conference matchup Friday, October 3, at 7 p.m. against the Oregon Ducks and return to its Big 12 schedule in College Station to take on the Texas A&M Aggies Sunday, October 5, at 1 p.m.
