Five OU faculty members will perform tonight in Sharp Concert Hall in Catlett Music Center as part of the Sutton Faculty Artist Series.
The Oklahoma Woodwind Quintet, made up of flutist Valerie Watts, oboist Johanna Cox, clarinetist David Etheridge, bassoonist Carl Rath and horn player Eldon Matlick have performed together for over 25 years, including such venues as Carnegie Hall in New York. The group recorded an album in 1990.
“We’re kind of like a family,” Etheridge said. “We rehearse twice a week, with sporadic performances here and there. We play at least once a semester on campus.”
Tonight’s performance was arranged by Rath, and will feature three different pieces, Etheridge said.
“The first half is ‘The Magic Flute Overture’ by Mozart and ‘Pulcinella Suite’ by Stravinsky; the second half is ‘Wind Quintet No. 2’ by Miguel del Aguila from Venezuela,” he said. “Our oboe player [Johanna Cox] heard the piece by Aguila, found it on the web and ordered it. We all heard the CD and went crazy. We thought, ‘We gotta do this piece.’ It has a lot of audience appeal and it’s a lot of fun to listen to.
The Quintet chose Latin American composer Miguel del Aguila’s piece to be the main attraction at the concert.
“The composition by del Aguila is so imaginative in its scoring and texture, we chose it for the centerpiece of our fall concert,” Watts said.
After the members of the Oklahoma Quintet asked del Aguila for permission to use his piece for the concert, he sent the music to them personally, Etheridge said.
“This will certainly be the first time this piece has been heard at OU”, Etheridge said.
