All I keep hearing this week is that the Sooners should be worried about TCU pulling off another monumental upset. Players and coaches alike haven’t talked about anything else all week.
Well, I’m here to set the record straight. I’m going to go out on a limb and say OU has absolutely nothing to worry about when the Horned Frogs come to town.
First, let’s start with history. Bob Stoops has only lost twice in Norman since taking over the reins in 1999.
Yes, one of those losses came against TCU. But that’s exactly why the Horned Frogs won’t be successful again this year.
Do you think Stoops would allow the same team to beat him twice at home? It would be humiliating.
The last time the Horned Frogs were here, the Sooners were a young team that underestimated their opponent. You can be damn sure that won’t happen again.
And the last time TCU was here, OU was full of uncertainty on offense. Paul Thompson was the starter, but he was benched in the middle of the game in favor of Rhett Bomar.
The offense was running around like a flock of chickens with their heads cut off. With Sam Bradford now at the helm, things will be quite a bit more organized.
For the Horned Frogs to win this time, they would have to legitimately outplay OU. Stoops says that’s what happened last time, but that’s not really true. The Sooners beat themselves in 2005, plain and simple.
Now let’s take a closer look at TCU. Yes, it has the No. 1 defense in the nation. Yes, it holds opponents to under 31 rushing yards per game.
But it has yet to face a tandem that even compares to Chris Brown and DeMarco Murray. In fact, one of TCU’s opponents — Southern Methodist — is ranked dead last in Division I-A with 31.3 rushing yards per game.
Another of TCU’s opponents — Stephen F. Austin — is ranked dead last in Division I-AA with 18.7 rushing yards per game.
Neither of the other two teams TCU has played — New Mexico and Stanford — are in the nation’s top 60 in rushing.
So clearly, the Horned Frogs’ gaudy defensive numbers are due to playing terrible teams. Now, I’m not implying TCU is a pushover. Not at all. This is the first ranked opponent OU has faced, and it’s ranked for a reason.
All I’m saying is that the Horned Frogs can’t surprise Bob Stoops and company again. This time, the Sooners know whom they’re facing and they know they need to play their best.
And their best should soundly beat the Horned Frogs. I’ll even make a bold final score prediction: 38-17.
