Car chase leads to man’s arrest
by   |  September 17, 2008  |

The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department and the Norman Police Department were involved in a car chase early Tuesday morning that resulted in the arrest of a 56-year-old man.

The chase came to an end just after 1 a.m. Tuesday. Cleveland County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Lawrence Stephen Devericks at the intersection of 12th Avenue N.E. and High Meadows Drive, Sheriff’s Department Captain Doug Blaine said.

Devericks was booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center on two counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon on a police officer, one count of eluding a police officer and one count of running a roadblock.

At about 11:45 p.m. Monday, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call they received from a suicide hot line in Oklahoma City that said there was a disturbance at the intersection of Indian Hills Road and Sooner Road, Blaine said.

When deputies arrived, Devericks fled in a car. Deputies pursued Devericks down the wrong side of 12th Avenue N.E, according to a Norman Police Department press release. At that time deputies also contacted the Norman Police.

The responding officers deployed “Stop Sticks” on 12th Avenue near Rock Creek Road, which flattened two tires on Devericks’ vehicle, the press release stated. However, Devericks did not stop.

“He was only going about 35 miles per hour ... because his tires were flat,” Blaine said.

Devericks was briefly stopped by a Tactical Vehicle Intervention maneuver (also known as a PIT maneuver) initiated by a Norman police officer, but he regained control and began driving south on 12th Avenue. He drove directly toward officers who were stopped in the road, according to the press release.

A police officer fired his pistol at the vehicle, and Devericks stopped. He was arrested soon after.
