The Daily’s Tim Bennett looks at several comics slated for release this week, from Catholics and criminals to Spider-Man

“Pax Romana #3”

Jonathan Hickman’s sophomore series takes the dramatic intensity and unique aesthetic of his first comic, “The Nightly News,” adds in futuristic technology combined with ancient history and delivers. The result is a study in graphic design, narrative structure, comic book theory and theology. Pick up the re-release of the sold-out first two issues of the series collected together in a “bumper edition”, also slated for release Wednesday, to fill in the backstory.

“Criminal, Vol. 2, #5”

The second issue of the four part “Bad Night” arc tells the story of Jacob, a detective comic cartoonist who suddenly finds himself inhabiting a world more fit for his P.I. character than for himself. Writer Ed Brubaker expertly crafts a sympathetic protagonist with a compelling and mysterious past while artist Sean Phillips’ art provides film noir shadows contrasted with vivid colors. The new expanded format of Volume 2 also provides articles and interviews with top crime story writers.

“Amazing Spider-Man #571”

After Marvel’s clumsy retcon in December 2007 brought back Peter Parker’s long dead friend Harry Osborne and broke up Parker’s marriage to Mary Jane, many fans were left wondering where Marvel planned to take the series.

Luckily, it has now been made thrice-monthly and put in the hands of a talented group of writers and artists, including rising comics star Dan Slott and “Spider-Man” veteran John Romita, Jr., who here complete their four-part “New Ways To Die” story.

The story features the return of Eddie Brock, The Green Goblin, and new character Menace and continues to draw interest in the supporting cast for the book, particularly Peter’s new roommates and co-workers.

Tim Bennett is a professional writing senior.
