In its weekend finale, the OU women’s (1-4) soccer team was shut out 1-0 at home against the Rice Owls (3-1).
The first half was a defensive struggle as both teams were held scoreless on 10 total shots, five for each team.
Each team did have opportunities to put its team on the board, but errant shots and two total goal keeper saves prevented anything to hit the back of the net.
The score remained tied when OU goal keeper Lisa Jett came out of her net to make a one-on-one save at the 62 minute mark on an opportunity for Rice which seemed like it would put them in front.
Rice could not capitalize on two big opportunities late in the second half as within minutes of each other as their ninth shot on the day bounced off the post and back into the field of play and Jett denied Rice’s tenth shot on another one-on-one chance.
In the 88th-minute Rice forward Anne Candee got the only goal of the game past Jett on a corner kick which she took. The game winner was her fourth goal of the season.
The Sooners had quite a few opportunities to score as they took a season-high 16 shots.
“[Today was] heartbreaking,” OU head coach Nicole Nelson said. “They put together 86 minutes of soccer and we give up a goal that goes directly in from the corner and it goes back to inexperience.”
