SOCCER: OU falls in overtime to UNT
by   |  September 6, 2008  |

The OU women’s soccer team dropped to 1-3 on the season to the North Texas Lady Eagles 3-2 in a physical game that ended in overtime.

OU got down early as UNT forward Kelsey Perlman headed defender Jacy Wicker’s corner kick into the top left corner of the net at the 20 minute mark.

Five minutes later the Sooners missed a good opportunity to tie the game when forward Lauren Alkek’s centering pass bounced off the top of the goalpost and midfielder Kelsey Allison’s rebound shot went directly into the chest of UNT’s goal keeper.

At the 36 minute mark, forward Whitney Palmer tied the game up with a breakaway shot on an assist from forward Ashley Farrand after missing on a similar opportunity just a few minutes earlier.

Palmer’s goal was her third goal in as many games.

With less than two minutes left in the first half midfielder Abbey Golliher put a redirection shot int o the back of UNT’s net to give them a 2-1 lead to go into the half.

The multiple deflections which led to OU’s second goal came off a corner kick by Palmer.

When it looked like the Sooners were going to be able to wrap the game up, UNT defender Kelli Lunsford evened things up 2-2 on a 35 yards-shot during the 84 minute.

Lunsford gave the Lady Eagles the win on an overtime goal in the 92 minute on a similar shot as her game tying goal during regulation.

“We just let a really good win slip away,” Coach Nicole Nelson said. “We just gave up the same goal twice in the last minutes which again accounts for inexperience and lack of focus.”

The Sooners return home Sunday at 1 p.m. to host the Rice Owls at John Crain Field.
