‘Greeks’ to appear at campus bookstore

Friday, September 5, 2008

Stars from ABC Family’s hit TV show Greek will make an appearance from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the University Bookstore.

They will be on campus to promote voter registration, which is part of a political awareness campaign sponsored by Declare Yourself and Follett Higher Education Group, said Rip Scott, director of the University Bookstore.

“The whole purpose of the event is strictly voter registration,” he said. “The Greek cast has agreed to come along and be a part of this, and it’s a big part of the draw to get people interested in coming. So it’ll be great to have the Declare Yourself people here to kind of walk the students through that.”

Cast members appearing include Amber Stevens and Dilshad Vadsaria, who will be signing autographs, speaking with students about the importance of registering to vote and helping them register. Online registration stations and paper registration forms will be available for students to fill out, and Declare Yourself will process them, Scott said.

Many college students have never voted before and may not know how to register, he said.

OU was one of five universities chosen for the campaign and celebrity appearance.

“We are a great middle-of-the-country location,” he said. “Whenever there’s a chance to get more involved in the campus community, and do something outside of selling textbooks, we’re really excited to do that.”

Many students are fans of Greek, Scott said.

“It’s a huge deal for us,” he said. “Students are very excited about it and very energized by this.”

The show, an ABC Family series, is about a group of college students in the Greek system at the fictitious Cyprus-Rhodes University.

Sarah Davies, international business sophomore, said she is looking forward to the cast members’ visit.

“It’s a show that I watch and I think it’s such a great event to raise awareness about voting,” she said. “I think those who know about the show are definitely going to attend.”

Caitlin McAllister, University Bookstore employee and multidisciplinary studies junior, said although she does not watch the show, she has heard about the event.

“It’s cool that they’re coming to the bookstore to get people to register to vote,” she said.

As part of the campaign, the bookstore will also feature several books related to the upcoming election, including Harper Collins’ Declare Yourself, which includes essays on voting from 50 celebrities, according to a Follett press release.

The bookstore will be handing out free reference guides with platform information about each presidential candidate, Scott said.

The university expects a large student turnout this afternoon. Scott said the event has already been successful at some of the other colleges.

“We’d like for it to be the biggest event out of all of them,” he said. “I just want to invite everybody to come out, get registered to vote, meet the cast members and just enjoy the afternoon with us.”
