David Gergen, a political commentator and former adviser to presidents of both parties, will speak at OU Sept. 17.
Gergen, who appeared on CNN Wednesday to comment on vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s speech, will be the keynote speaker at a President’s Associates dinner in the Sandy Bell Gallery of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.
Before the dinner, Gergen will have an informal discussion with students about current national politics.
“David Gergen’s visit to OU gives our community a unique chance to hear first hand his insights into the current presidential election,” OU President David L. Boren said in a press release.
The university frequently hosts national and international scholars and policymakers during national conferences, said Jay Doyle, press secretary and special assistant to the president.
Over the years, guests have ranged from former President George Bush and former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell to broadcast journalist Katie Couric and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer.
Gergen is editor-at-large of U.S. News & World Report. According to the release, he has served in three presidential administrations for both parties. Gergen has served as director of communications for President Ronald Reagan and held positions in the administrations of presidents Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton. He served as counselor to Clinton on both foreign policy and domestic affairs.
In 2000, Gergen published “Eyewitness to Power: The Essence of Leadership, Nixon to Clinton.” He also has served for two years as moderator of “World @ Large,” a 13-part PBS discussion series.
He is a professor of public service at the Harvard Kennedy School, where he serves as director of the Center for Public Leadership.
A native of Durham, N.C., Gergen is an honors graduate of Yale University and Harvard Law School. He is also a member of the District of Columbia bar. Limited seating is available by reservation for OU students, faculty and staff, with overflow seating available for the public.
