The OU Women’s soccer team’s (1-12, 0-4) losing streak reaches the double-digit mark as the No. 22 Missouri Tigers (9-3-0, 4-1) handed the Sooners its tenth straight loss with a 2-0 shutout.
Friday night’s shutout was OU’s third consecutive scoreless game as the last time it scored was during the first half against Texas Tech on Sept. 28.
Head coach Nicole Nelson changed things up a bit as she started goal keeper Traci Dickenson over regular starter Lisa Jett. The visiting Tigers made Dickenson’s first career outing a hectic one as it put together an onslaught of shots as she faced 23 total shots – 12 in the first half and 11 in the second.
“It [the amount of shots by Missouri] calmed me down more because I got more comfortable with everything coming at me,” Dickenson said. “So, I preferred that.”
The Sooners were also without starting forward Lauren Alkek for Friday night’s matchup because she was suspended a game for receiving two yellow cards in her previous outing on October 5. This caused Nelson to rearrange the lineup but she said she was happy with how her team reacted to the changes.
Missouri got on the board early when forward Alysha Bonnick put an uncontested shot past Dickenson after the ball came out of traffic right to her during the eighth minute. Bonnick’s goal was her fifth on the season, which ties her for the team lead with midfielder Kristin Andrighetto.
The Tigers expanded its early lead just four minutes later when midfielder Michelle Collins directed a corner kick into the back of the net from a yard out. Midfielder Meghan Pfeiffer was credited with the assist, giving her third of the season.
The Sooners had a big opportunity late in the first half to make it a one-goal game when leading goal scorer forward Whitney Palmer had a breakaway broken up by Tiger goalkeeper Tasha Dittamore.
The second half was a defensive struggle as neither team could put anything on the board despite their 19 total shots – 11 by MU and 8 by OU – during the final frame.
Missouri reached a new team single-game record as it had 12 corner kicks. The previous record was 11.
OU had a chance to put a goal on the board for the first time in three games when it had a penalty kick with 42 seconds left in the game but could not convert.
Even though the match ended in a loss, Nelson was pleased with her team’s effort.
“This is the most fight I’ve seen in this team yet this year, and I’m actually really proud,” Nelson said. “I’m as proud as you could be with a loss.”
The Sooners return to John Crain Field Sunday at 1 p.m. to take on the Kansas Jayhawks. Sunday afternoon’s game will be Sooners Kids Club Day and all children will receive coupons which will be good for free food at the concession stand and there will be special pregame activities for Kids Club members.
