While most students are heading down to Dallas or recovering from what they did the night before, the OU women’s soccer team (1-11, 0-3) will be at John Crain field against the Missouri Tigers (8-3-0, 3-1), Friday at 7 p.m., and the Kansas Jayhawks (8-4, 2-2) Sunday at 1 p.m.
So far, all of OU’s conference games have been on the road and they have yet to have back-to-back weekend home games since the final weekend of August.
“It’s really exciting to know we have two [games] at home,” defender Katie Corbitt said. “To be here playing on our field instead of having to travel will definitely help make it easier on us.”
Currently, the Sooners are in the midst of a 9-game losing streak that began on Sept. 5. Their last victory came on Aug. 31, in a 2-1 affair against the Ball State Cardinals.
This weekend’s opponents bring two completely styles of play to the field which brings along two completely different game plans. Head coach Nicole Nelson said Missouri’s strength is in its athleticism and constantly attacking the defense while Kansas plays more conservatively as they look to strike during the final third of the game.
Despite knowing each team’s style, the Sooners are focusing on their first opponent and being able to play against the Tigers’ system.
“We’ve been working on how we can beat Missouri’s backline,” forward Whitney Palmer said. “We need to take into the game what we’ve been working on in practice, pretty much, because I think it will work.”
The Tigers are currently looking to establish a winning streak as they go for their third straight win. Over the course of its 11-game season, Missouri has won 7 of their 8 games in shutout fashion, including its previous two games against Big 12 opponents, No. 17 Colorado and Texas Tech.
All-time, MU has a 6-4-1 series lead over OU and won the previous meeting in 2007, 3-1, in Columbia.
“We have to come out hard and play the whole game,” Corbitt said. “If we happen to go down a goal, we can’t let it affect our game and come right back out and start attacking again.”
The second game of the weekend should not be as taxing of a game as the first one as the Jayhawks are, in comparison, a more offensively lax team by focusing on maintaining possession rather than playing a deep-ball style of offense.
Kansas is coming off a 2-0 loss to the Colorado Buffaloes at home, where it has lost half of its games. The Jayhawks are 4-2 on the road and have barely outscored the home team 13-9.
In OU and KU’s 12 total meetings, Kansas holds an 8-4 advantage of the Sooners. OU won 2-1 in Lawrence, Kansas, in their last meeting, but the Jayhawks won in their last game at John Crain Field in 2006, 1-0.
The first 500 fans at Friday’s game will receive free OU pom-poms and Sunday afternoon is Sooners Kids Club Day, where all kids will receive coupons which will be good for free food at the concession stand.
