Victoria’s Secret to visit campus
by   |  October 7, 2008  |

Students won’t have to leave campus today if they want to buy a new pair of underwear.

Victoria’s Secret will be hosting a “pop up shop” sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in front of Phi Kappa Psi., 720 Elm Ave. In addition to an ongoing clothing drive, the shop is one of two efforts to promote the company on campus and give back to the community, said Chelsie Baugh, Victoria’s Secret campus representative.

She said the company is hosting sales at 15 universities across the U.S. to promote the Pink Collegiate Collection to 18- to 22-year-old females, the store’s target market.

“It’s essentially a store on campus with the newest gear from Victoria’s Secret Pink,” said Baugh, public relations sophomore. “It’s kind of a big deal they chose Oklahoma.”

The sale will feature OU-themed Victoria’s Secret gear not yet in stores, including jackets, tote bags, sweat pants and T-shirts, Baugh said.

“Being the week of OU-Texas, it’s fun to be able to buy really cute clothes that show pride in your school,” she said.

Victoria’s Secret will also be hosting a “pop up shop” outside the stadium at OU-Texas Friday and Saturday featuring both OU and Texas gear, Baugh said.

“It’s kind of supporting rivalries,” she said.

Additionally, Victoria’s Secret’s “Recycle Your Sweats” initiative, which began last week, is a competition between several other universities to collect men’s and women’s used clothing. It will be donated to the Women’s Resource Center in Norman, Baugh said.

“The ‘Recycle Your Sweats’ program is kind of misleading,” she said. “We’re taking all types of donations, men’s or women’s clothing, bags or purses.”

The collection bin, which is in front of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house, has already collected close to 700 items, said Britan Mills, campus representative for Victoria’s Secret and public relations sophomore.

“I think we all have clothes in the back of our closet we’ve been hanging on to for no reason,” she said. “There’s really no better time to donate than now.”

Emily Smith, dental hygiene sophomore, said she has donated over 350 items alone. Her family members helped contribute many of the donations, she said.

“I sometimes feel selfish that I have so much stuff that I don’t wear,” she said. “Why should I keep it when I’m going to wear it two more times and someone else who would love it would wear it every day?”

Mills said she thinks the clothing drive is a great way to support the community.

“It’s just really great for students to have one more outlet to help out and give back,” she said.

Victoria’s Secret is accepting donations until Dec. 10, Baugh said.
