Soccer: OU shut out against Oregon

The OU Women’s soccer (1-10, 0-2) team fell in the October opener to the Oregon Ducks (7-2-1, 0-0) 2-0 to extend their losing streak to eight games.

Friday night’s shutout loss was the Sooners’ fifth of the season and was its third in the last four games.

The first half proved to be a defensive struggle as OU and Oregon went into their respective locker rooms in a scoreless tie. During the half, the two squads combined for 11 shots – 2 by the Sooners and 9 by the Ducks – and Sooner goal keeper Lisa Jett made all five of her save opportunities.

Even though the first half was scoreless, OU head coach Nicole Nelson was less than thrilled with her team’s performance as she said they “went through the motions.”

The game did not stay tied for long as Ducks forward Jen Stoltenberg took a pass from defender Haley Wilson and put a shot past the outstretched Jett from 15 yards out during the2046 minute mark.

At the 52nd minute Stoltenberg split the OU defenders and put her second goal of the evening into the back of the net to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead early in the second half. Stoltenberg’s goal was her seventh on the season, which leads the team as the next closest is 4 from forward Teresa Bowns. Bowns was credited with her third assist on the season on the goal.

“Once again, we give up two goals back to back and dig ourselves a whole and then are chasing for the rest of the game,” Nelson said. “We have got to learn and find a way to regroup, someone take the reins, and go back at the opponent instead of completely losing out focus. That’s, I think, the sixth time this year we’ve given up back to back goals. Again, that happens with youth and inexperience, but we’re over halfway through the season and there’s not really any excuse for it at this point.”

The Sooners had a couple opportunities to put goals on the board as their best chance came at the 69 m inute mark when forward Lauren Alkek’s breakaway shot missed just left of the post.

Overall, the Ducks outshot the Sooners 15-8 as two teams were even in shots for the second half with 6.

The Sooners return to the playing field Sunday at 1 p.m. to take on the Texas A&M Aggies in College Station, Texas.
