The OU volleyball team drew first blood against No. 3 Texas Wednesday evening, but in the end, the Longhorns’ efficiency and experience proved too great a challenge.
With 1,356 fans on hand – the fourth-largest turnout all-time at McCasland Field House – Texas continued it’s tear through the Big 12, defeating the Sooners 3-1 (25-21, 14-25, 20-25, 19-25) in a match nationally-televised on ESPNU.
The Sooners (7-7, 3-3 Big 12) took advantage of a shaky, mistake-laden Longhorn squad in the first set, out-hitting Texas .312 to .209, while committing zero attack errors.
Texas (9-2, 3-1 Big 12) eventually rebounded, hitting .415 the rest of the way and out-killing the Sooners 64 to 44 overall.
Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Francie Ekwerekwu led the charge offensively with 12 kills, while junior outside hitter Bridget Laplante added 10. Freshman setter Brianne Barker notched her eighth double-double of the season with 33 assists and 11 digs.
The Sooners return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Ames, Iowa, to meet Iowa State at 6:30 p.m.
