Saturday’s win over Texas Tech was one of the most dominating performances of OU’s recent history. It featured near-flawless execution, superior coaching and a fan base that was perhaps the most raucous it has ever been.
And that’s exactly what makes this weekend’s game against Oklahoma State so dangerous.
If ever there were the threat of a letdown, this game would be it. Players were on an absolute high after the throttling of Tech, and Bob Stoops turned the postgame attention to BCS rankings rather than the next opponent.
Stoops returned to talking about OSU once practice started this week, but you have to wonder if the BCS distraction has been completely eliminated.
The fact is that there’s still one more game to play in the regular season. O-State always gives the Sooners a run for their money, and this year the Cowboys are perhaps the best they’ve been this decade.
Not only is it Bedlam, but the game is in Stillwater, where OU has a history of trouble.
Now, I’m in no way implying that I expect OSU to ruin the Sooners perfect season. But I will say that the Cowboys worry me. And all this attention being paid to the Big 12 Championship and possible national title doesn’t help.
The one thing that should encourage Sooner fans is that the game will be played on a national stage. College GameDay will be there, and the environment will be electric. The Sooners have been in such a situation countless times. Stoops is used to it, and so are the players. Gundy and the Cowboys? Not so much. Advantage: OU.
