40-day challenge update
by   |  November 24, 2008  |

Here I am, almost halfway through the 40-day fitness challenge, and things are moving along.

This last week I have been able to get in almost an hour of exercise every day. One day, I logged 20 minutes on the climbing wall at the Huston Huffman Center. The only day this week I didn’t have a proper workout was Saturday after I pulled a 16-hour shift working the football game.

But Thanksgiving break is looming, and that could put a dent in my routine.

I would love to say that the biggest health concern over Thanksgiving is going to be the food, but barring the desserts, I think the bigger problem facing me this Thanksgiving will be lack of exercise.

I can see it now. I’ll eat a large meal and then wander into the living room, pie in hand, to watch a football game. Plus, I’ll have a hard time tearing myself away from my family, whom I don’t get to see often, to sneak in a workout.

Since I’ll be away from the gym, the other problem will be staying on target with my workouts. When you have to exercise out of town, it’s hard to maintain your routine.

Lucky for me, the Huffman’s challenge calendar offers several suggestions to boost physical activity over the holiday.

On Thanksgiving Day, it’s suggested to walk for at least 30 minutes following the feast. There is another challenge to play football with friends and family. These are things I could do that would not only stimulate my body, but also involve the entire family in quality time outside the confines of the living room.
