Heading into Wednesday, the OU volleyball team’s only home losses had come at the hands of teams at one time ranked in the top 25.
The Sooners refused to let Kansas break that trend, overwhelming the Jayhawks en route to a 3-1 victory (25-13, 25-13, 22-25, 25-20) at McCasland Field House.
OU (11-14, 7-10 Big 12) opened its three-match home stand in style, blitzing the Jayhawks (12-13, 6-10 Big 12) from the opening serve and holding them to a .000 hitting clip through two sets.
“That’s part of being at home,” head coach Santiago Restrepo said. “When you are that young, you feel much more at ease … The home court advantage for any team in the Big 12 is huge.”
Junior outside hitter Bridget Laplante led the offense for the third consecutive match, registering a match-high 14 kills. Freshman outsider hitter Caitlin Higgins and redshirt sophomore Francie Ekwerekwu each added 12.
Freshman setter Brianne Barker landed her sixth-straight double-double (15th overall) with 46 assists and 12 digs.
With the victory, the Sooners split the season series with Kansas, who bested OU by an identical count of 3-1 in Lawrence, Kan., back in October.
In their first meeting, Jayhawks outside hitter Karina Garlington bludgeoned the Sooner defense for 17 kills.
After opening the match with six kills in the first frame, OU clamped down on Garlington’s attack and held the recent Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I National Player of the Week honoree to three kills for the remainder of the evening.
Senior libero Lacy Barnes stalled Garlington’s momentum during the second frame and finished with a team-high 26 digs for the match. Laplante added 26, while the blocking front was commandeered by five blocks from sophomore middle blocker Sarah Freudenrich.
“We’ve been working hard in practice this week,” Laplante said. “We’ve been gelling really well, our second team has been testing our first team and I think it’s been showing.”
The Sooners have an open date this weekend and return to action on Wednesday, when they host Texas A&M. First serve from McCasland Field House is set for 7 p.m.
