Women's basketball: Sooners crush Oklahoma Christian in exhibition finale
by   |  November 12, 2008  |

Courtney Paris started things off for the Sooners Tuesday night with an easily layup off a dish from Danielle Robinson, and that momentum is what led to OU’s 106 to 50 rout over Oklahoma Christian.

OU started off the game quick, but Oklahoma Christian was able to keep up with OU for much of the first half.

The Sooners made some early mental errors and a few bad passes, but the ladies were able to make up for their mistakes with quick defense and fast break points.

The Sooners led the Eagles 60-31 at the half.

The most interesting statistic by halftime was the Sooners domination from behind the three-point line shooting 57 percent for the half.

The second half proved to be a much better half for the Sooners and Coach Sherri Coale said she saw some important improvement.

“ I was really pleased with our energy in the second half,” Coale said, “I thought we turned it up defensively”.

Coale pulled the starters in the second half and things began to get a little sloppy, but it also proved just how deep the Sooners bench is.

“If you’re the sixth or seventh man you might be the leading scorer, so that may be the spot everybody’s vying for,” Coale said.

The leading scorer for Tuesday’s game was another player from the bench, Roethlisberger with 17 points on the night.

"I think confidence is a huge thing for me,” Roethlisberger said about her performance. “It also was my team out there helping me out.”

She was one of seven Sooners to put up double digits, however, it was the first time in a while where Courtney Paris fell short of a double-double. Her sister, Ashley Paris, took care of that posting 10 points and 11 rebounds.

“Performance from the bench is always important, and it will be important against very good teams.

"What remains to be seen still is in clutch situations and pressure situations when people come off the bench how they respond,” Coale said.

While the performance from the bench was a positive upward trend, the number of turnovers was a sore spot on the state sheet for OU.

"I don’t think that 20 turnovers tonight is an accurate reflection of what we can do with the basketball,” Coale remarked.

OU committed 20 turnovers against a much smaller and outmatched Oklahoma Christian.

OU now looks forward to Saturday when they host UC-Riverside at 2 p.m. for their first game of the regular season.

Freshman Whitney Hand said the team is ready and looking forward to Saturday’s game.

“We cannot wait…it’s all going to fall into place,” Hand said.
