Men's basketball: Sooners continue exhibition dominance

Through 80 minutes of exhibition play for the OU men’s basketball team, sophomore forward Blake Griffin is a perfect 16-for-16 from the field.

The unanimous preseason All-Big 12 selection led all players with 17 points (6-for-6 shooting) and 11 rebounds Saturday as the Sooners routed Cameron 94-39 at Lloyd Noble Center.

The visiting Aggies struggled to match OU’s size and speed on both ends of the floor, managing only 13 first-half points, on 4-for-23 shooting. By comparison, Griffin had 11 points at halftime.

For the second consecutive game, OU converted on the majority of its offense, shooting 54 percent from the field while holding Cameron to 26 percent and head coach Jeff Capel said he’s just ready to get the regular season underway.

“I thought we got better today,” Capel said. “I thought we played better than we did the other night. I am glad the exhibition season is over with and we are looking forward to the real thing starting Friday.”

OU followed up its 90-43 thrashing of Panhandle State last Wednesday with a similar statistical blowout of the Aggies.

The Sooners nearly doubled Cameron’s efforts on the boards, out-rebounding the Aggies 48-25, including 17 offensive boards.

OU’s constant defensive pressure stymied the Cameron offense from developing anything of substance in transition, especially in the early going and Griffin said the intensity on defense was pivotal to a well-balanced attack.

“The defense gets the offense started and helps get everyone involved,” Griffin said. “It helps us get our groove going, especially in a game like today. I like getting out there and trapping all over the court and really getting into it.”

With the Sooners trapping and flashing sporadic double teams, if an Aggie offensive series didn’t end with a mistimed jumper, it ended with a blocked shot. If neither of those occurred, the result was likely a Cameron turnover.

Cameron managed only four points – all courtesy of junior forward Jamaar Burke – through the first 13 minutes of play and while the box score may look daunting, Capel said there is still plenty of room for improvement.

“I know we’ll shoot the ball better,” Capel said. “I’m glad we got these two bad shooting days out before we start it for real … One of the things from Wednesday’s game we saw that we needed to improve on was our help side defense and our ball-you-man defense. Guys standing and just watching, I thought we got a little bit better on that today.”

The Sooner defense forced 23 turnovers and finished the afternoon with nine blocks and 12 steals.

Offensively, the shot selection had a near-even balance between inside and outside, with OU tallying 52 points in the paint, converting on eight of 24 attempts from 3-point range and sprinkling in a mere five attempts from midrange.

Guard Willie Warren overcame a shaky start and scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half; nine coming within the frame’s first five minutes of play and the freshman said the early slump is just part of the learning curve.

“This game, it was a little tough for me because I had a rough first half,” Warren said. “I put my head down a little, but Coach Capel talked to me at halftime and said just keep playing, don’t hold your head down and come through for the team in the second half.

With OU stretching its lead to as large as 68 points, 13 players saw action with the Sooners’ bench tallying 47 of the team’s 94 points.

Commendable bench efforts were turned in by sophomore guard Cade Davis, who finished with 14 points – including four 3-pointers – and freshman guard Ray Willis, who added nine points and five rebounds.

OU went with the same lineup as it did in its exhibition against Panhandle State, starting with Warren and Austin Johnson at the guard positions, with forwards Tony Crocker, Blake and Taylor Griffin rounding out the frontcourt.

Outscoring their two exhibition opponents by a margin of 184-82, the Sooners open regular season play on Friday when they host American University at 7 p.m.

American is coming off one of its most dominant seasons in program history, which included a record of 21-12 and a Patriot League Championship that resulted in an NCAA Tournament berth, and Capel said it’s going to take an improved effort to take down the Eagles.

“Defensively, we have to get better and offense execution has to get better,” Capel said. “[American] return four of their top-five scorers … They’re an experienced team and they know how to win. They’re a tournament team and were picked to win their league, so it’s going to be a battle.”
