Assessment and Learning Center

Located in Carnegie Hall, Rm. 200, this entity provides numerous helpful services to the student body. They host Student Success Series Seminars throughout the semester. These are free, non-credit seminars to help students learn college survival skills. They also offer Action Tutoring, a free, walk-in, course specific tutoring program. For more information, contact the ALC at (405) 325-4336.

Test Files

Old tests can be a key in looking at the content and format of a professor’s tests. They may not provide the answers, but they do give you a leg up on how the questions will be asked. Take a look at hub.ou.edu.

Office Hours

Access to your professors is not limited to class time alone. On the class syllabus, there should be information pointing out allotted time for a professor’s office hours. Many freshman classes can be rather large, so the one-on-one time that these hours provide can make all the difference. And what better place to get help than from the teacher feeding you the information?

Tutoring

Tutors can be found through numerous channels, but a great place to start is at tutoring.ou.edu. After logging in, students can punch in class specifics to find a tutor that meets their exact needs. Cost and reviews are made readily available in order to find quality at the right price.

Q&A with Dr. Lisa Portwood, Director of the Center for Student Advancement

Q: What issue affects student performance more than anything else?

A: Attendance. Go to class. It provides the student the chance to talk to their professors and ask for help.

Q: What should a new student avoid?

A: Getting discouraged. It can be hard. If it was easy, everyone would do it, but only about 20-25% of people get a college degree. It is all a learning experience, so don’t get down.

Q: What are key resources available that new students should know about?

A: Action Tutoring, without a doubt. It’s one of the best. I think an oft times overlooked resource is the professor. Who better to help than them? There’s also the writing center.
