OU volleyball team loses final match of tournament
by   |  August 31, 2008  |

After splitting the first two matches of the Sooner Legends/Nike Invitational on Friday, the OU volleyball team took the tenth-ranked Cal Poly Mustangs to the edge Saturday afternoon.

In the tournament’s final match, the ever-game Sooner squad fell just shy of the upset in five sets of action, 16-25, 25-19, 25-22, 16-25 and 11-15.

There was a minor hangover from the 3-0 loss to Wichita State the night before, but the Sooners kept their composure and snatched sets two and three from the Mustangs, who boasted five returning starters from last season’s Sweet 16 squad.

Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Francie Ekwerekwu carried over her momentum from the night before, leading the way with 16 kills. Junior outside hitter Bridget Laplante added 15 kills of her own, as well as a match-high 21 digs.

Ekwerekwu and Laplante combined for over 60 percent of the squad’s kills on offense, while sophomore middle blocker Christy Disarro continued to stonewall the opposition up front with a match-high 4.5 blocks – two solo and five assisted. Overall, Disarro averaged a tournament-high 3.83 blocks per match.
