If you were here in February, you might remember we tried to give you a condom or two.
The Daily taped 10,000 donated condoms on its Feb. 13 issue for National Condom Week in an attempt to raise awareness about sexual health on campus.
Well, were discussing that awareness again, but this time weve got a suggestion.
A study this month conducted by Trojan Condoms rated 100 universities on their Web site concerning sexual health.
OU scored an overall C and received an F for its condom availability. Cs were awarded for HIV/STI testing awareness, sexual assault services and outreach programs on the Internet level.
People who conducted the study and Trojan said the studys ratings are intended to reflect room for improvement on sexual health awareness, specifically on the Internet.
A C for OU indicates there is room for improvement, and we couldnt agree more.
For our part, we think sex.ou.edu would be a good move a portion of OUs Web site devoted to sexual health issues.
At the bare minimum, the site could provide locations (such as Goddard Health Center and the Cleveland County Health Department) where people can get condoms, HIV and STD testing or other sex-related products for free.
Beyond that, breakdowns could be provided about different contraception methods, and STD statistics and symptoms could be made readily available.
Students could submit questions to be answered in publication on the site by medical professionals from Goddard or the Health Sciences Center.
Perhaps users could even author their own comments for responsible, anonymous publication on the site.
Wow, the possibilities.
And those possibilities are (or, at least, should be) the wave of the future, whether any old fart who believes sex is sin and should be kept out of the public realm thinks so or not.
The viruses around today are far too dangerous to be ignored under the pressure of a vocal minority who might oppose OUs promotion of a sexual health Web site.
When we taped condoms to the front of our paper, we received three angry responses.
If OU were to start something like sex.ou.edu, we bet it would receive a lot of gratitude from students.
hello there & you too
