Sooner shocker
by   |  September 13, 2006  |

For the first time in over two decades, the OU volleyball team has beaten the Texas A&M Aggies.

In front of 2,588 fans in College Station, Texas, Wednesday, the Sooners swept the Aggies (30-28, 30-26, 30-28), who had received votes in the top 25.

OU had to withstand a match that saw 16 lead changes and 31 different ties.

OU middle blocker Eliane Santos led a dominant Sooner defense and recorded eight block assists. She also added a solo block at the net.

Eliane is one of the top blockers in the country and she finally showed her potential tonight, OU volleyball head coach Santiago Restrepo said. She was a big difference-maker for us tonight.

The OU defense combined to hold Texas A&M to a .172 hitting percentage in the best three-of-five match.

With the win, OU moves to 1-0 in conference play. Overall, the Sooners are 9-2 and on a seven game win streak.

It is the first time OU has won in College Station. The all-time series is lead by the Aggies 32-2.

We are definitely excited to open the Big 12 season with a win, Restrepo said. Hopefully it will give us confidence as we go into the season. However, we must continue to improve and well start tomorrow morning getting ready for Nebraska.

The match-up with the No. 1 Cornhuskers will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at the McCasland Field House.
