The Oklahoma Daily: Our View 9-7-06
by   |  September 6, 2006  |

The temptation to gamble away well-earned money at the new casino in town must be great to some people.

With 2,200 electronic games, an off-track betting area and more than 70 blackjack and poker tables, Riverwind is an alluring venue.

OU President David L. Boren said that OU must try to educate its students about the dangers of gambling and we couldnt agree more.

Theres nothing wrong with playing the occasional game of the ever-popular poker with friends. When you play in a casino, however, you might get lucky once or twice, but, in the end, the house always wins.

This goes for all casino games with varying probabilities.
OU should provide its students with educational information about the risks of gambling and the possibly life-changing problems it can lead to.

OU may also want to look into setting up a gamblers anonymous group for students who find the temptation too hard to avoid.

Riverwind may be a good tourist trap for Norman, especially on football game weekends when visitors travel from all over the country to see the Sooners.

The problem, however, is that no revenue comes directly from Riverwind to Norman.

Students should avoid spending too much time in casinos at all costs: the slight chance of winning something isnt worth the problems gambling can cause.

If students really need to gamble, the best thing they can do is limit their spending and have someone responsible to answer to.
