The Oklahoma Daily: Our View 10-31-06
by   |  October 30, 2006  |

Candy, ghosts, scary movies, candy, vampires, ghost stories and candy all the things that make Halloween fun for children.

Alcohol, parties, men dressed as women and women in as little clothing as their bodies will allow all the things that make Halloween fun for college students.

Its certainly curious that, in a time when women have made strides in the social and business worlds to be seen as equal to men, female college students see Halloween as an excuse to dress like a street-walker.

At a college Halloween party one could easily think he or she is walking around the red light district of Amsterdam, or down South Robinson in Oklahoma City: The women are normally costumed in about as much material as it takes to make a child-sized handkerchief.

The Daily is not condemning this practice, but merely calling into question the mind-set that these women must have.

Does it make a woman feel empowered to dress like a naughty nurse or slutty Catholic school girl? If so, why?

Or are women forced into the traditional skimpy outfits because thats all that stores offer in their costume section for college-aged females? If this is the case, are the stores answering to demand, or are they creating the trend?

Does our society sexualize everything so much that its forced Halloween to become an excuse to play out sexual fantasies and competition for the one night of the year when it can be seen as a joke?

Probably.

The Daily just thinks its funny that a trend like this could have such obvious social causes and consequences, and no one talks about it.
