Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

When "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" landed in theaters in 2003, arguably the best thing about the film was that it was a truly unique, original film amidst a sea of sequels.

Sequels have a funny way of being either absolutely horrible or extremely entertaining. Luckily, the sequel to "Pirates" is the latter.

In "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" the wonderfully eccentric Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is once again fighting with some supernatural beings. Although the curse of the Black Pearl has been lifted, Jack stills owes a blood debt to the grotesque-looking Davy Jones, ruler of the ocean depths and captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman.

While Jack tries to figure out a way out this debt, the wedding between Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) is interrupted because they are punished for helping Jack attain his freedom in the first film. The journey for all the characters to gain freedom takes them on adventures with cannibals on an island, confrontations with sea creatures and mysterious appearances of familiar characters.

Johnny Depp's performance of Jack Sparrow in the original film earned him an Oscar nomination, and if the Academy were a little more up-to-date with the general audience, I'm sure he would receive another for this performance. Once again, Depp portrays Jack as hilarious, quick-witted and somehow, sneakily attractive. Instead of feeling that the flamboyant Jack's character is tired and old, he's still very fun to watch.

The other actors in the film are able to stretch their performances, and different sides are seen of the likable Will and Elizabeth. Their characters are given more personality, as opposed to appearing one-dimensional.

The computer imagery of Davy Jones and various characters is so detailed and precise. At times it's hard to believe the characters aren't real.

The action and adventure are almost non-stop, so the two-and-a-half hour film seems to fly by. During this long film, the filmmakers and actors deliver plenty of sword action under intense circumstances.

This film guarantees a good time with all the action, humor, romance and twists. You will not have a satisfying summer until you see this unique, entertaining sequel.
