What a difference a year makes. OU was swept in the season series last year against Texas, dropping all three games, including an overtime loss at home. That was the pre-Paris era.
Wednesday night's sound 75-57 lashing of the Longhorns showed Sooner fans the Paris era is in full swing. Courtney notched her 17th double-double of the season, finishing the game with a career high 32 points and 16 rebounds. Ashley added 11 points and 11 boards of her own. The dynamic duo suffocated the Longhorns and top scorer, Tiffany Jackson, all night long. The reigning Big 12 Player of the Week only managed 11 points against the stout Sooner defense.
"I thought we did a really solid job on her," OU women's head basketball coach Sherri Coale said. "The past two years we haven't had an answer. It's amazing what size can do."
OU's resounding victory in front of 7,600 fans at Lloyd Noble Center kept legendary Texas coach Jody Conradt from becoming second all-time in collegiate basketball victories. She is currently tied with Dean Smith with 879. After the game, Conradt complemented Courtney's ability.
"We knew she would get her points. You can't shut her down," Conradt said. "I would have been happy if she would have gotten 20. She's hard to guard."
After trailing 12-11 in the first six minutes of the game, OU exploded offensively, shooting 55 percent from the field in the first half. They would never trail again.
The twins combined to score more points and pull down more rebounds than the entire Texas team in the first half, allowing OU to take a 40-26 lead to the locker room.
"Oklahoma is a good team. We just didn't respond. We totally lost our focus," Conradt said. "Obviously it wasn't a good game for us."
The Sooners move to 6-0 in conference play, while Texas falls to 4-3. Conradt knows OU is on the brink of locking up the division, despite the limited of number of games played thus far.
"It's not over but it's getting close," Conradt said.
Courtney's supersized effort helped OU snap Texas' four game winning streak while extending its own to four games. After the game, she was asked what the team could improve upon heading into Saturday's game against Texas A&M. Humble as always, Courtney replied, "I'm going to watch film on this game and try to get better."
Now that's a scary thought.
