Police make arrests in connection to vandalism
by   |  February 5, 2006  |

The sound of shattered glass and screeching tires rang out in neighborhoods throughout Norman beginning Thursday night.

Norman police have received 56 reports of more than 100 vehicles with windows shot out by an air-powered pellet gun, according to police records.

Police have arrested two juvenile suspects in connection with the vandalism reports, according to a press release.

Reports of vandalism have come from all across Norman, but some reports are concentrated in the area directly west of the OU campus between Cruce Street and Willow Lane, records state.

Norman residents William and Lorraine Cosden live in the 1700 block of Cruce Street. Lorraine Cosden said she heard a car come careening around the corner between 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. Thursday night. The next morning, she found three of her 1990 Ford Aerostar van's windows shattered.

The vandals shot out windows in the Volkswagen minibus of the Cosdens' neighbor. Across town, Lorraine Cosden said her son had also been a victim of the vandals Friday evening, where one of the pellets went through his kitchen window.

William Cosden said the estimated damages to the car were $1,200.

"I'm upset because I can't see the purpose," William Cosden said. "It doesn't even seem like it would be fun."

Sunday morning, an off-duty police officer recognized a dark-colored Honda Odyssey minivan, which resembled a vehicle that had been photographed by surveillance cameras at one of the vandalism scenes, the press release states.

The officer, Det. Chris Amason, followed the minivan in his personal vehicle. When the minivan stopped, Amason approached the two juvenile male occupants and spotted items inside which were "consistent with air gun use," the press release states.

Norman police took the suspects to the police station and notified their parents.

"I'm hoping their parents will put the hand of God down on those boys, before they get into something worse," Lorraine Cosden said.
