Mates of State define the meaning behind its band name as describing two like-minded people, according to its Web site. This description is especially appropriate considering members Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel are married.
Husband-and-wife duo Mates of State will bring its brand of organ and drum-based pop to The Conservatory in Oklahoma City tonight.
Ever the performing multi-taskers, Mates of State perform individual instruments -- with Gardner playing on electric organ and keys and Hammel taking percussion duties -- while both sing. Mates of State's vocal style, which the members call "dueling," has become part of the band's signature sound.
Laura Spencer, psychology sophomore, said this singing technique has a direct correlation with the music's meaning.
"It's like they're working together to tell a story," she said. "There's definitely a chemistry on-stage, and it's fun to watch."
Mates of State formed in the late '90s in Lawrence, Kan. and then relocated to San Francisco, where they have since released four full-length albums.
Their latest release, a four-track EP titled "All Day," has won acclaim with fans and critics alike -- including The New York Times.
Joe Scavella, fan and public relations junior, has yet to see the band perform and is eager to see Mates of State live.
"I like their poppy dance sounds," Scavella said, "They're just this hip married couple that does cool music together."
Spencer, who once drove three hours to see the band, said she's excited that Mates of State is playing in the area.
"It's a really energetic show," she said. "The music is upbeat, and a lot of their songs are great to dance to."
