The greatest-ever regular season game
by   |  October 20, 2005  |

It pains me to say the Notre Dame-USC game from last Saturday is the greatest regular season college football game I've ever seen because I don't like the Trojans.

USC was never tested like they were Saturday. Playing in a hostile environment, the game pitted two top-10 teams who threw in everything but the kitchen sink to get the win.

The mystique is back at Notre Dame, thanks in large part to first year head coach Charlie Weis. Weis has them believing they can win, not just hoping.

To add in one more twist, the Irish came out in their green jerseys. They had won their previous three meetings against the Trojans with the green uniforms.

In a first half full of emotion and timely plays, the Irish were up 21-14 at the break.

We've seen it before. Against Oregon and Arizona State, USC was down at half. They would demoralize both teams on way to victory.

Reggie Bush all but cemented his Heisman campaign for the year by rushing for three touchdowns and making defenders look silly all afternoon, including his last scamper that gave USC a 28-24 lead.

After Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn ran for a touchdown to put ND back up 31-28, a sense of elation went through Notre Dame Stadium with two minutes to go.

A sense of real doubt was also put in the minds of the Trojans as admitted by Bush after the game. Leinart stepped up, converting on fourth down deep in their own territory on a 64-yard completion. Though his sneak for the game-winning touchdown may be controversial, I have to give him some credit for the courage it took to run that play. If he's stopped, game over.

Ever want to see a capacity crowd go from crazy to dead silent?

Snatch victory from the jaws of defeat like the Trojans did in their unreal 34-31 victory.

A great game features big time players making big time plays.

It involves momentum swinging back and forth with a constant high level of play.

No game can be truly legendary without a classic finish, and this game had it all.

So many games have trouble living up to the hype. For once, we were treated to a game that was better than advertised.

While the Ohio State-Miami 2003 Fiesta Bowl still reigns as the greatest game I've seen, there is a new king for the regular season.
hello there & you too
