Lacrosse gaining support
by   |  October 20, 2005  |

Lacrosse has been big in the Northeast for some time now and holds the distinction of being the first American sport. However, it is in its infancy here at the OU.

OU Club Lacrosse is in its first year, and already it has grown to a good size. There are a total of 50 players: 24 men, and 26 women.

University College freshman Alex Perry started the club after talking to other lacrosse clubs in the region including the University of North Texas.

"Back in June I sent an e-mail to the president of Oklahoma State and the head coach of North Texas, because he's also the president of the Lonestar Alliance," Perry said. "They pretty much gave the groundwork of what all I needed to do."

The club already has support from Brothers, who provides the club with a share of the profits from burgers sold on Tuesdays. Perry added that "we're still looking for more businesses to help us out."

OU Club Lacrosse competes in the Lonestar Alliance division B, which is a league full of teams from Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana. Already, the club has big plans for the future.

They have scheduled scrimmages against fellow Big 12 teams Kansas State, Kansas and Oklahoma State, as well as TCU. OU Club Lacrosse is also trying to build a rivalry with Oklahoma State, as they are in the process of creating a neutral site rivalry game with a trophy rewarded to the winner.

Although Perry has been playing lacrosse for the last six years, about half of the members had never played lacrosse before this semester. After playing in middle school and high school and captaining a team back home, he wanted to continue playing here at OU, introducing the sport to the school.

"I was sitting around in June and decided I wanted to start up a club and keep playing lacrosse," Perry said.

Only a handful of the members are from Oklahoma. According to Perry, "close to half the players are from the North." This includes himself, as he is from Ohio.

This northern influence showed at practice last week. Despite a light rain on what was possibly the coldest day of this young fall, the players declared it "perfect lacrosse weather."

Perry then went on to talk dreamily of lacrosse games played in knee-deep mud. Lacrosse is clearly not a sport for the weak of heart.

With two practices a week and help from sponsors, everyone is improving and getting ready for their first tournament in early November. They are even considering adding an extra day of practice on Sundays to help them prepare for tournaments and the Lonestar Alliance season that begins in the mid-January.
hello there & you too
