Extra meal points rolling over for spring
by   |  November 29, 2005  |

Students with unused meal points at the end of the semester will be able to use the points in their meal plan next semester or donate them to charity.

"Meal points rolling over is a service that we like to provide the students," said Dave Annis, director of Food Services.

Food Services decides each year whether points will roll over between the fall and spring semesters. The decision is based on the financial situation of Food Services at mid-semester.

Annis said they are right on budget this year.

Like past years, students will still have the option to donate meal points to charity before going home for winter break.

Students can donate meal points to Food and Shelter for Friends or the Women's Resource Center. Beginning Monday, Dec. 5, donation coupons will be available at Xcetera. At the end of the semester, Housing and Food Services will send a check to the organizations for the amount of donated meal points.

Food and Shelter for Friends operates a soup kitchen and food pantry for homeless in the Norman community. The organization relies heavily on donations, said Rebecca Peterson, homeless services coordinator at Food and Shelter for Friends.

There is usually a jump in donations at the end of each semester because students have extra meal points that will be lost otherwise. She said there could be fewer students donating this semester because meal points will roll over.

Lena Canepa, University College freshman, said she will donate some of her meal points next week. She said she wants to help out, because she knows she won't use them.

Most students will give to charity whether their meal points are rolling over or not, said Rena Hall, University College freshman.

"If they haven't used [their meal points] by now, they won't use them next semester," she said.

Many students have used all their meal points this semester, so they don't have extra to give away.
