Texas Tech looks to have its best shot at beating OU since Mike Leach took over the Red Raiders in 2000.
This year, the Red Raiders have one of their best teams. They are 8-2 and No. 21 in the nation. However, they are coming off a stunning, 24-17 loss at Oklahoma State Saturday.
OU is 6-3 and unranked. A win over Texas Tech would probably vault them into the top 25. But would it be an upset?
"We don't consider any game an upset unless they're in the top five," senior fullback J.D. Runnels said.
The Red Raiders are coming off a loss, and OU has rattled off four straight wins. Plus, they have a five-game winning streak against the Red Raiders.
A streak made more amazing by Leach's high-powered offense. Even with all the points the Red Raiders have scored under Leach, they have never had more than 25 points against OU. That came in 2003 in a 56-25 OU win in Lubbock.
--Teacher vs. Pupil: Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach was Oklahoma's offensive coordinator in 1999.
--Familiar Face: Tech running backs coach Seth Littrell graduated from OU in 2000 and played fullback on the 2000 national championship team.
--Flight for Second: The winner of this game will finish second in the Big 12 South.
--Senior Send off:For the second time in a row, OU's trip to Tech will be on the Red Raiders' senior day.
Stoops said he is familiar with Leach's offense. He said Leach is running the same plays he ran when he was at Kentucky in the late-'90s.
"For the most part, the body of it is still there," Stoops said. "They try to disguise it with different formations, but they're still the same plays."
This year, Texas Tech has the nation's top passing offense and is No. 3 in total offense behind USC and Texas.
Stoops said the Sooners' success against Texas Tech has come from personnel.
"We've matched up well," he said. "We've had the ability to close on the short passing game and tackle well. We've had strong teams that played well together."
He said the defense will have to play equally well to extend the winning streak over Texas Tech to six games. Sophomore corner back Marcus Walker said the defense has to play smart against the Red Raider offense.
"Discipline is the key thing in playing an offense like Tech's," Walker said. "They do a lot of things, and if one person misses their job, it could lead to a big play."
