Filmmaker series to start Saturday
by   |  January 28, 2005  |

The OU Film and Video Studies Program will start a special film series revering talented women filmmakers at 2 p.m. Saturday in Meacham Auditorium in Oklahoma Memorial Union.

The series will start off with Greek writer/director Penny Panayotopoulou, and she will be screening and discussing two films: Michael Cacoyannis' Stella at 2 p.m. and Panayotopoulou's own film Hard Goodbyes at 4:30 p.m.

Panayotopoulou's film was voted Best Film of the Year in Greece for 2001.

Andrew Horton, director of film and video studies, is co-teaching a related "dream" course titled "Women Filmmakers: Up Close" and is conducting all the screenings and discussions in the series.

"We don't pay enough attention to how film is beginning to change because there are some very talented women around," Horton said. "They're beginning to make a difference."

Horton said Panayotopoulou already visited his Introduction to Film class, and he said the students loved hearing her.

"She talks about the fact that you don't need a lot of money to make a good film. You just have to listen to what's inside of you," Horton said.

Panayotopoulou will speak this Saturday about women in Greek film-in camera and behind the scenes.

Along with Panayotopoulou, other featured female filmmakers in the series include: Pamela Koffler, Gaylene Preston, Carol Littleton, and Amy Madigan.

Each female filmmaker will be featured in the following Saturdays, and the series is open to anyone who wants to attend. Admission is free.
